The definition for Shaken Baby Syndrome or SDS (as defined by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome) is: A term used to describe the constellation of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking or shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child. The degree of brain damage depends on the amount and duration of the shaking and the forces involved in impact of the head.

Symptoms: Symptoms of this syndrome include...

- diminished appetite

- problems sucking or swallowing

- vomiting

- irritability

- tiredness

- convulsions

- inability to lift or turn head

- pupils different sizes

- difficulty breathing

- stops smiling or vocalization

- coma

Long Term Effects: Shaken baby syndrome is very serious. Shaking a baby can result in...

- learning disabilities

- physical disabilities

- rib fractures

- chronic seizures

- blindness

- cerebral palsy

- death: 1 out of 4 victims die

Consider the things a baby is feeling as they stare at a parent or caregiver whom they love while they are being forcefully shaken. Can you conceive of the fear and confusion the baby would feel. Do not let your baby become a victim of shaken baby syndrome.

Coping: Education is the first step in preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER SHAKE A BABY. When frustrations come, put baby on the floor and walk away. Once you have settled down then return to the room and care for the baby. Try to meet the babys fundamental needs; feed the baby, change the diaper and burp baby. If these things don't stop the crying, try a few of these methods:

- wrap the baby in a blanket

- provide a pacifier

- walk around with or rock the baby

- get a noisy toy

- take him/her on a walk in the stroller

- ask a friend or parent (someone you trust) to watch baby for a while

Shaking a baby is a choice that you make. SBS is preventable. Never, never, never shake your baby. Do not permit a fleeting moment of frustration to result in murder.
